Today is 10 Jan 2007. In my most recent time table, I have a day break. That's Wednesday, so as today. Today is my first break for this entire semester.
I'm doing a degree in Psychology at HELP recently. That's first year. I get this offer because I have completed my foundation in ARTS at HELP last Dec. If you want to know how did I do in my foundation, I would tell u that I got a HD (High Distinction) and 2 Di (Distinction) among the xx subjects I have taken...I meant to make my results look prettier by writing that way...hehe...
I am supposed to post my blog on the first day of my degree class (08/01/2007) but good things will never be too late to share (that's written in my dictionary...=D). My first class is the subject called Leadership and Life Skills. Is that need to be learned? Yes. It is very important. That's what Mr. John, my lecturer of the subject said. Let's make this easier for us to start (cited from Mr.John, 2007).
What shape are you? Choose ONLY one.
1. Circle
2. Square
3. Triangle
4. Squiggle
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Let's see how the shape you have chosen reflects you...
Circle - a good companion
Square - can be a leader, well-balanced
Triangle - a good leader
Squiggle - hard to mention
Everyone in the class laugh when they look into the answer for squiggle. Know why? Because almost 3/4 of the class choose the shape - squiggle...Hahaha...Betz and Ai Li, you were late for class and you had missed it!!! What about me? I'm circle. The answer that Mr. John gave is totally different from what I tought of...
I choose circle because:
1. I like circle more compare to the others.
2. I am round.
3. I don't like angles, that's too ugly for me.
4. The Earth is round and I'm living in it, so I must choose it to show that I love the Earth (what a ridiculous one...shhh...)
After all the introductions about the course, we came to the pre-lectures session.
What is leadership? What is a leader? Sounds very formal right? BUT what Mr. John wanted is an answer that is abstract.
Leadership is like... Leader is like...
I like the way he taught so much!!! That's me!!! I learn through that way he is teaching...
Well, what's my answer then? I would like to share my answers with you although you might want to ignore it.
"Leadership is like a piece of cake. You will get to indulge yourself with a piece of cake that really taste great. It just like leadership. If a team's leadership is good, you will "indulge" yourself as well. What's more is the result. It will be an indulging one if an effort is given. That all need a word to make it happen...HEART.
A leader is like a baker. Whether a cake that is made indulge everyone is all depends on the baker. Again the word HEART is mostly important. Everything made of Heart is worthless. =D"
So If you have ignored it, that shows you are a smart one. Well, I just feel that my descriptions is good, but is too awful for you.
What's make my feel more awful is that I had plenty of "PSYCHO" in my life these weeks. Like (no offense friends):
F: What are you doing?
M: Psychology.
F: Oh, Psycho!
M: ...
F: How is your Psycho class?
M: ...
F: Hey Psycho need to register groupings ah?
M: I'm not Psycho (Haha)...yah...we need to register for lecture groupings...
I think that's enough before I "burst"...just kidding...but a reminder here for my dear friends,
I'm a psychology student, not psycho. You can say I'm doing psy or psychology BUT not psycho.
Remember yah!!!
What makes people think that I'm psycho? What makes people think that psychology is psycho? What people think about psychology? Is psychology the same as psychiatry? Why I want to do psychology?
All these questions might not be familiar to you, but it might be familiar for my psy friends and very familiar to me.
People who never know what psychology is will relate it with Tanjung Rambutan. That happened to my mum few years ago. People who know a little about what psychology is will say that I will be a psychiatrist one day. A Psychologist (Clinical psychologist) plays the same role that a Psychiatrist plays, just that a psychologist do not subscribe medicine. Psychology is the scientific study of human behavior, thoughts, and feelings BUT they won't lead you to read people's minds, just understanding. Psychiatry is the study and treatment of mental illness. You need a 5 years doctor study and later specialize in psychiatry. However psychology is different. You need to obtain a min of Master in any psychology area to be a psychologist.
What makes me want to take psychology as my major then? For the very beginning, I just want to help others. Later then, someone asked me a very good question. Why must be psychology? Why other courses cannot do to help others?
It's very true. E.g. conducting a business can help others by providing them a job opportunity, leads the country economic growth as well. I can give an answer for that only upon completed my foundation course. I have understand that I am good in Maths all the while. However, I did poorly in Science. I can't do Science courses like Biomedical etc. I understand that I can be a good listener and a good companion. What's more is that I am interested in taking it as a career. Later while in foundation, I get to know that I am interested in doing researches as well. As I'm poor in Science, I will have to keep this interest for economic studies, management studies or psychology. All these need researches as well. While I was going to complete my foundation course last Dec, I did struggled in deciding whether to continue having psychology as major next year or change into management. This is because psychology is not an easy course to do and I can have an easier course to accomplish my dream. Psychology is hard compare to management (that's my point of view yah!).
During the time when I was enjoying my semester break in Johor Bahru , I had a pretty good time to clear my state of mind there. Everything that make me confused and hard to decide had come to a conclusion that I agree to finally. Likewise, I choose psychology, that's what I really want to do for my entire life, at last. The others are stated in my lastest friendster profile "About Me" section (do have a view of it yah...). I had a wonderful trip in S'pore as well. That's the most meaningful holiday I have up to now (will share my second trip to S'pore in my next post). Okay...out of topic de...come back to my second lecture...
My second lecture is Research Methodology. What is this subject about? Well, it is meant for us to learn some basic research skills that will be very useful for psychology research later. I get shocked with the lecturer and the course outline in the very beginning. Ms. Winnee, our lecturer has a pretty fluent English speaking but it's too fast for me. I can feel the pressure in me for the worries of not being able to catch her lectures next time. The assignments are the next shock I had. Let's ignore the future assignment and just focus on the recent group assignment I have to accomplish before the CNY. Well, it's very easy (compare to the others). Just naturalistic observation. For example, there are four of us in a group. We meet up in McD one day and sit individually at the corner, observe how many adults buy Happy Meal during the entire hours. We just have to sit there and observe for 3 hours and record. Our work will be done with an individual report. Easy right? BUT did you count the 3 hours? Can you sit there and observe for 3 hours without falling asleep or feeling tired or whatever? Hahaha... That's why I almost got heart attack that entire time...easy...not easy...easy...not easy...haiz...
Up next is the social psychology class...I don't have much to say about this lecture except for the 20 sentences about Who Am I?
Mr. Kenneth, our lecturer of this course had came up with the activity "Who Am I?" when he touches the Basic Concepts in Social Psychology regarding the Self (if you don't understand what it is, just ignore it) during the lectures.
Suppose to start every sentence with "I am..." but I did it another way...this shows that I am not paying attention in class!!!
wHo Am I?
1. I am who I am.
2. I might not be the one that you are familiar with.
3. I can be consider as a good companion.
4. I am a good listener for once a while.
5. I have something in common with you.
6. I like chocolates and cakes BUT not chocolate cakes.
7. I want to do what I want to.
8. I want to be what I want to.
9. I just want to live accordingly.
10. I am willing to be different from others in some ways. (What ways?)
11. I need some privacy.
12. I need someone to care about me.
13. I need someone to understand me.
14. I don't need a boyfriend (now).
15. I don't need a marriage (now).
16. I am always curious about something (cute?).
17. I am different.
18. I am good in Maths, Add Maths.
19. I am good in research.
20. I am constantly changing (into a good one?).
These are 20 sentences about me. Sounds familiar? It's in the "About Me" friendster profile as well. This is the lastest me. The "Me" after weeks in Johor Bahru and four days in Singapore...
I can feel the changes in me...I think you might be same. Yah! It's you. Don't look around. It's you. If you don't think so, I will prove it by the time being. Who knows I will change again? Will I regret choosing psychology as my major? Who knows?
